Latest OnSong for Android News - January 2014

The Android version of OnSong is one major step closer to completion with the addition of OnSong Connect.  The older versions of OnSong had OnCue only, which used an old Apple technology to link OnSong user devices together with Bluetooth, however this was completely incompatible with Android.  OnCue was also unstable and dropped out in a crowded room, which is basically anywhere bands play. Now with the releases of OnSong 1.98 (fixes and new features) and 1.981(fixes the fixes) we've developed an API that allows devices running OnSong to connect to each other using WiFi instead.  One device works as a server (master) and the other devices running OnSong Connect can be controlled by the original.  The newer technology not only creates faster, more stable connections between you and your band, but allows access from multiple platforms.  That means that OnSong Connect enables iOS devices to talk to Android, Windows, Mac, and more.  This is a major step in the continued development of the Android version of OnSong in the near future.
OnSong for Android has been a priority for us for a long time, but the truth is, we are a small startup, and with that come challenges.  When our lead Android contractor fell through recently we were forced to take Android development in-house.  Next, the release of iOS 7 created major instability in older devices and our programmers were forced to deal with bugs instead of developing the Android version of OnSong.  These aren't meant to be excuses, but just keeping you all updated on the challenges we face as we press on to deliver you the best software possible.  The good news is that OnSong v1.981 seems stable, OnSong Connect is running, and we can concentrate all our energy on getting the Android version up and running as soon as possible.  We also want to let you know that the OnSong 2.0 and Android versions will have a very similar look and feel, with a faster, more intuitive user interface.  While our developers are crunching on Android the rest of us will continue to provide awesome (and FREE!) support, new video tutorials, and new updated OnSong website with upgraded store.

You have been a blessing to our music teams! I look forward to Onsong for android. I made a change from apple products to android a few tears back. I didn't want to invest in an apple product just so I could use Onsong.I will wait patiently for Android version.

Been waiting on this since I sold my ipad 2 a couple years ago. I hate there is nothing for Android out there since I used OnSong to store all of my music. I can't wait...literally.

Do you have a target release date for the Android version? Having a rough date would help me greatly with planning. Thank you.

We have some iPad users in our worship band. I head up technology in our Church (and play rhythm guitar in one of our bands), and I have to admit, I was opposed to them doing this - I think that a central display that everyone can see would be better - and more cost effective - not everyone can afford an iPad. I do have an Android tablet, and I'm willing to give this a shot, when you come out with the Android version. I guess, it would be nice (although I know with development it is hard to pin a date down) to get some sort of target date - are we talking this year, or 2 years from now? Thanks!

Oh, one other thing. The people in our band using OnSong have said that (as far as they know), there is no link to "Song Select" - which is a division of CCLI - we subscribe to that, and our worship software links to it, so it would be nice to get our chord sheets from the same place.

Thanks!

I play music professionally and onsong is the only app i wish i had for my android device. I cant justify the cost of apple equipment for 1 app. Everyday i see more and more android devices with retina display huge mem and at least a quarter of the price of apple equiv. I think its only a short matter of time that android will really impact hard on apple as the price difference is becoming silly and the first developer to get their onsong type app into that market will cement themselves as the benchmark others will be judged against. I would love just a basic no frills version. I know how many features onsong has but have you guys thought of releasing a basic android version without space shuttle launch capability?. Most musos just need a good scrolling friendly to edit use chord chart app that we can put our setlists in and gig. You can add the bells and whistles as you develop but i would happily buy a basic version just for the nice layout and chord highlight features that onsong does which makes it so nice to use when performing over existing android scrolling apps. If you have a basic copy would be happy to roadtest it for you and give you feedback.

Android users: SONGBOOK
compatible with the chord pro file type used by OnSong. Have used it for a year. Works great... not OnSong... but works wonderfully.

Hi folks, I've been waiting for two years now for the Android version of onsong, and would happily pay for it. I can't conceive what could take so long to deliver, but I'm guessing that despite the (infrequent) comments to the contrary this just ain't going to happen. I do think that this is a shame for you as well as us, because I agree with previous comments that Android will be a big market. However I will check out Songbook as suggested and see if it can do what I need.
