We've been super busy building the best app we can for musicians. This process takes a lot of time, effort, and occasionally some tears. But after all that, we hope what you find something waiting for you in your updates tab that you'll love.

If you've followed OnSong for any length of time, you may have noticed our peculiar version numbers. You may have also have been expecting that nebulous "2.0" release. This post is for you. We hope this will explain a little bit about the development of OnSong and why we've moved to a new version number.

OnSong was released as one of the very first apps for iPad in 2010. At that time, iOS app development was brand new and nobody knew exactly what would happen in the future. So, it seemed pretty logical to start the version of OnSong at 1.0. In no time, I started receiving feedback on this little experiment I had released to the world. It was obvious that it struck a chord with musicians everywhere. There was praise for building such a product, but there was also a ton of feedback. We received bugs, complaints, and a lot of feature requests. Being a solo developer working in his free time, I started storing all of this feedback and quickly iterating on the app to try to please my new user community.

By early 2011, it became obvious that OnSong was growing faster than I could work on that list. My wife had lost her job as an Athletic Trainer after we had our first child and I had run out of free time to keep up with the demands of OnSong users. We tried to integrate OnSong into our day jobs to no avail. By the end of 2011, we realized we needed to make the jump to full-time. This meant leaving our day jobs with a newly-purchased home, private school tuition for a foreign exchange student, and a new child. It was a big leap. Our goal in this was to finish that list of feedback and get to the next big version of OnSong.

What has become apparent for many app development shops is that releasing large upgrades every few years is no longer the way software is made. The app economy operates in a completely different manner. Development is now highly agile and iterative. This allows developers to make changes to their products a little by little and over time. As it turns out, this is better for end-users too. Imagine what would happen if OnSong updated itself from version 1.0 to version 2.0 and caused confusion or an issue on stage right as you were going live. It would be chaos! Instead, we have changed the product a little bit at a time over time so those changes seem less intrusive. It gives our users time to learn new features and put them into practice without being overwhelming. It also means you get all these updates without an expectation for an upgrade fee.

Yet still, we've never felt that we had added enough new features to call it "2.0". Our last version had comically added five nines after the one! Our marketing manager was looking into a sponsorship deal with Sesame Street and the Count for the number 9. We finally needed to come to grips with something... OnSong doesn't make software in large, multi-year versions that our version number dictated. We evolve our software over time and our version number was slowing us down.

Welcome to 2018. Starting today our version number is simply a year with a number following it. We believe this will allow us to more easily form each release and add the core features you desire with each update. This doesn't really change the way we've been producing OnSong all along. In fact, over the past eight years, we've added hundreds of features originally slated for "2.0", all as free updates. We are embracing that method of software development and will continue to work hard to add features all while keeping OnSong stable on the latest iOS updates and devices.

They have backing tracks assigned to each song and perhaps even motion background videos for a more dynamic show. If you are using higher-quality audio and video files, the size of your OnSong library can grow quickly, causing issues with backing up those gigabytes of files.

Of course a backup file is only useful if it's stored off of the device. This allows you to restore your OnSong library quickly in the event that the device is lost, stolen, or damaged. The best way to ensure your library is safe is to have it automatically backup to Dropbox or another cloud-based storage service. If you're library is too big, it could put your backup strategy in jeopardy.

We've added a new setting in OnSong that brings the size of your backup files down while still giving you a novel way to rebuild your library in the event of a device failure.

Go into the Utilities Menu in OnSong by tapping on the gear icon in the menubar. Then tap on Settings and choose Advanced. One of the first options is Backup Media Files which defaults to being toggled on. Toggle this off and then tap the Done button. If you have large media files contained in your OnSong library, they will be omitted from the backup file, making it much smaller.

You may be curious as to what happens when you restore a library that had the media files removed. OnSong still backs up your entire library such as songs, sets, settings, books, and even media. The references to those backing tracks and motion backgrounds are still restored, but the underlying media files will be missing. You can then restore those separately. To do this, you would just import the files again. As long as the filename of the original media file is the same as that in the restored library, OnSong will relink the media file to the original media entry. This makes restoring a library a multi-step process, but it also means you can backup and restore faster, and then just import the media you need when you need it.

I hope that gives you a new way to work with OnSong. In the unending pursuit to push the limits of modern mathematics and computing, OnSong LLC has announced the immediate release of OnSong 2.0 Minus Epsilon Edition. "We couldn't be more proud of our team and the ingenuity of our engineers and mathematicians to solve this massive conundrum", says Jason Kichline the founder and lead developer of OnSong LLC, "And we've done just that".

The key to not-quite launching the most anticipated release of OnSong yet lies in the incrementation strategy of its version numbering system. "Almost 7 years ago to this day, I uploaded the 1.0 version of OnSong to Apple for approval", recalls Kichline. "A few days later we were approved. We didn't know what sort of impact OnSong would have on the world, but we loved the simplicity of that singular moment of integer-based bliss". Even then, a sole decimal point situated between two indivisible numbers hinted at the future success of such an app for musicians.

Almost immediately after launch, Jason began receiving emails about the beauty of this "1.0" concept along with lists of features and bug fixes. "Frankly, the first version sucked and shouldn't have been called that. Maybe I should have started with version 0.92 or something, but Apple wouldn't let me.", he quipped. Working in his free time at nights and on weekends, Jason began making improvements to the nascent program based on user input. In a about a week, version 1.1 was released. Since that time in 2010, more than 70 versions of OnSong have been released, each one more accurately approaching, but never quite attaining that two point "oh" designation.

Thanks to the feedback of a vibrant community of almost satisfied users, OnSong continues to build the best app for musicians, albeit within the realm of a one digit. "Every now and then we think about just adding that one feature that we feel would make OnSong complete, update the number and be done with it. But instead we make it more stable and able to run on six versions of iOS.", bemoaned Product Manager Jaime Kichline, "Then Jason drinks a little too much coffee and stays up late and the next morning OnSong is setting mood lighting in our home office along with computer generated techno."

Prior to this release, OnSong was only able to achieve five levels of floating point precision with version 1.99922 which made those brave enough to recite the number aloud sound like a angry, stuttering, German ballerina. Apple only permits versions to be entered that are less than seven characters in length. "We thought about making an Android version of OnSong just to get around this limitation because it's open source", says Jaime, "But then we'd be right back to 1.0 anyway on that platform so it just didn't make any sense. None of this makes any sense."

The key to putting off the inevitable was the mathematic concept of epsilon. Often misunderstood as a "backwards number 3" or the "greek letter nailed to the front porch of a frat house", the epsilon symbol is used in the epsilon-delta definition of the limit in the field of differential calculus. "Essentially it's the closest possible number to absolute zero, that's not absolute zero based on the limitations of the system, such as a computer system.", informed Dr. Justin Tuple who's Dean of Theoretical Mathematics at Celebrate Online University. "By taking a whole number like 2 and subtracting epsilon, the OnSong team has done the unthinkable. Truly, it's unprecedented in the field of mobile application development". So why do it?

"We feel that releasing OnSong 2.0 would be a declaration of a future perfection; a ceasing of our mortal struggle towards completion and wholeness.", Kichline waxed philosophically, perhaps even theologically. "Slowing the measured rate of symbolic progression allows us to do what all of us dream of doing with our precious gift of life; to attempt to impede the incessant march of time and the ultimate cessation of breath to a point just before we take that next, logical, momentous step into eternity, into the next life. We are just not ready to leave behind the beauty and wonder of our first creation just yet."

It's this combination of near spiritual dedication that drives the OnSong team towards the continual creation of what some consider, just an app. But to the team that is constantly fiddling with the bits and bytes of transient electrons whirling through etched silicon, it's so much more. "Maybe we're crazy, or maybe it's just Jason, but either way we just want to keep building cool stuff.", says Chris Lard the developer of OnSong Console for Mac.

OnSong's Support Manager Kendra Shaver puts it best –
"I'm just glad we didn't actually release 2.0, I mean then we'd really find out what we're missing."

To see what's new in version 2.0 Minus Epsilon, who are we kidding? April Fools!
FYI: We are coming out with an actual release soon.Jason Kichlinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11006805253910934588noreply@blogger.com74tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7096691049268307183.post-70095513261922990692016-12-15T16:16:00.000-05:002016-12-15T16:33:43.322-05:00iPad 1 Support Is Ending
In March we announced that the iPad 1 is no longer supported for development making it difficult to test on an iPad 1 prior to releasing new updates. We have continued to struggle with this, but have managed to make it work for the past 9 months. Our goal has always been to support our iPad 1 users as long as we could.

The time has come. We can no longer provide updates for iPad 1 users while still maintaining updates for 99% of our users. Simply put, we need to update frameworks provided by other companies like Dropbox to maintain interoperability, but those framework are only available now on newer versions of iOS. In fact, some services that OnSong uses will begin to stop working as these companies shift to newer technologies.

In an effort to keep our users in the loop on what we are doing, we want to make you aware that beginning in 2017, OnSong updates will only be available on devices running iOS 9 and higher. All other users will not be able to update, but will still be able to run your current version of OnSong. We are working hard to have a version that is stable and will give you the performance capabilities you depend on with OnSong.

We encourage you to upgrade your iPad or iPhone to the latest version of iOS possible and update your OnSong as well. This will allow you to have the best features and performance that is available to you.

Since it is the holiday season, what better time to ask Santa for a new device for Christmas? Now is a great time to buy a new iPad as Apple is lowering their iPad prices. After about a week, we have found a few issues that may effect you.

Never update a performance device without being sure that an update will not effect you. We recommend backing up your OnSong library periodically to ensure you can switch to a different device or rollback to a previous version of iOS if needed.

Backing Tracks

Apple seems to have made changes to the Music player in OnSong that is causing issues with playing backing tracks. If you've linked songs in your OnSong library to backing tracks in your iTunes Media Library, you may experience this issue.

How To Replicate
This issue exhibits itself when you start a backing track on a song in a set. Then while it's still playing, switch to the next song in the set that also has a backing track. When the first song finishes, starting the next backing track will result in previous backing track playing.

Reasoning
The reason this happens is that OnSong enqueues the upcoming backing track to the built-in iOS Music app when the next song in the set is loaded. This appears to fail in iOS 10.1 and higher if the player is currently playing another track. We have reported this to Apple as a bug and are awaiting a response.

Workaround
The good news is that OnSong has a really simple workaround for this issue. Simply go into the Utilities menu in OnSong (gear icon) and choose Settings » Live Settings » Audio Playback and enable the Crossfade Enabled switch. This will force backing tracks to be played by the OnSong backing track player instead of remote-controlling the Music app. The only downside with doing this is if you have volume changes or have trimmed the track within iTunes. The workaround will also not work with tracks that have DRM (digital rights management) or that are streaming from Apple Music or iCloud.

AirPlay Mirroring

It appears that iOS 10.1 has removed the ability to AirPlay to older AppleTV devices (2nd and 3rd generation). We are testing to confirm which AppleTV generations this effects. We have tested a device running iOS 10.2 beta and it appears that AirPlaying to all generations of AppleTV has been restored.

Some of you have asked if it is safe to update to iOS 10. We have tested OnSong with the final released versions of iOS 10 and OnSong has been working great. As of the time of this writing, approximately 43% of active users are running iOS 10 with about 47% of users running iOS 9. We have not had any users report any issues specifically with OnSong running on iOS 10.

That doesn't mean you won't experience an issue. Some users have experienced issues during the update process or performance problems with iOS 10. We always recommend that you backup your OnSong library before performing any updates in the event there is a problem during the process. Please watch our backup video tutorial to learn how.

We also recommend that you backup your device to iTunes or iCloud so if it's every lost, stolen, or stops functioning, you can restore to another device.

One change that has happened in iOS 10, if you are now prompted to allow OnSong to access your iTunes Media Library. If you decline, OnSong is not able to access your iTunes Music Library to link chord charts to tracks. If you inadvertently declined to provide access, you can turn this back on by going into the Settings app and choosing OnSong on the left under Applications. You can then toggle iTunes Media Library access at the top of that screen.
Jason Kichlinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11006805253910934588noreply@blogger.com28tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7096691049268307183.post-86584899397853206082015-11-04T14:21:00.002-05:002015-11-04T14:21:34.876-05:00New OnSong Feature - Quick Pick

What better way to respond to the crowd than to throw in a song that you never planned on performing? Now with the new Quick Pick feature, you can find songs and view them in as few as three taps of the screen - making it so you never even miss a beat!

Simply tap on a song title in the heads-up display area of the menubar and the Quick Pick screen will open. In the Quick Pick screen, type a word from the title of the song. As you type, OnSong will find matches in your library that contain that word in the title of the song. If you are unsure if the song is the one you are looking for, tap on the magnifying glass icon on the right to preview it.

We've had a number of users tell us that OnSong will begin to start and then shutdown to the home screen when no Internet connection is available. We have confirmed this a bug in iOS 9 on iPads, potentially only those with cellular data. iPhone models do not appear to be effected. The crash is caused when OnSong attempts to find nearby peers via OnCue using the original version of OnCue which triggers an exception in iOS 9's networking libraries.

The Synopsis

New installations of OnSong will automatically select the new version OnCue and not the original. The original version of OnCue uses an Apple framework that has been deprecated by Apple since iOS 7, but remains available in OnSong for backwards compatibility with iOS 5 and iOS 6 devices. Until iOS 8.4, this framework has continued to work. Current versions of iOS have caused bugs in the framework that will likely not be fixed by Apple due to their deprecated status. If you had this version of OnCue set in your preferences, it will continue to be used in iOS 9 which is what is causing the issue.

The Fix

Luckily the fix appears to be simple. Go into the Settings app from your device's home screen and choose OnSong on the left. Scroll to the Menu Settings section on the right and open the Sharing option. Under the OnCue section, change OnCue Version to "New" instead of "Original". Close out of the settings screen and open OnSong.

The Solution

We have changed OnSong 1.999 to automatically switch to the new version of OnCue if it was already set. We are planning allow an override of this in case Apple fixes this bug in the future.

We are working hard to finalize OnSong 1.999 to correct this an other found issues. We thank you for your patience as we work to ensure stability on the best app for musicians!
Jason Kichlinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11006805253910934588noreply@blogger.com17tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7096691049268307183.post-40017219196134671382015-09-30T13:30:00.001-04:002015-10-01T10:31:03.879-04:00The State of iOS 9Upgrading to iOS 9 is on the minds of our users and we want to share what we know so you can make an informed decision.

Please Backup Your Library!

No matter what, always make sure that you have a backup of your library in case a problem arises. We've had users that experience issues when upgrading their iOS and have lost the information on their device. It's easy to make a backup file. Safety first!

What do we know?

OnSong 1.999 provides fixes to iOS 9 bugs

Keep in mind that there are some issues with iOS 9 when running the current version of OnSong such as the date picker in the set editor and light text on menus when sorting or performing actions. We are aware of these issues and have them fixed in the upcoming OnSong 1.999 release.

Thank you for your patience as we work to research all reported issues and finalize our testing. We should launch OnSong 1.999 in mid-October.

Apple continues to release minor updates to address bugs

Apple has released iOS 9.0.1 within a week of the initial launch and has released iOS 9.0.2 today. That means there are still many issues they are working to resolve. iOS 9.1 is also in progress and being sent to beta testers.

40% of our active users are running iOS 9

When there are problems, we hear about them. However, we have received no further reported issues. Most users are reporting good results.

Here's the iOS breakdown over the past week: iOS 9: 40%, iOS 8: 50%, iOS 7: 8%, iOS 6: 1% and iOS 5: 1%.

Hardware vendors are urging customers to hold off on upgrading to iOS 9

AirTurn is urging customers to not update to iOS 9 due to Bluetooth connection problems. We have tested OnSong with AirTurn pedals under iOS 9 and it appears OnSong is behaving properly. Pairing pedals in the iOS 9 Bluetooth settings screen appears to be the issue. Some users have reported Bluetooth devices disconnecting.

iOS 9 fixes some longstanding iOS 8 bugs

Shortly after iOS 8 launched, OnSong reported major issues to Apple. We have worked together with Apple and have confirmed these issues have been addressed. If you have had crashing issues when using stage monitor mode on Lightning port devices, or have poor formatting in Microsoft Word documents, iOS 9 will correct this.

WiFi and Bluetooth has been overhauled in iOS 9

iOS 8 has been a nightmare for many users in regards to WiFi performance and peer-to-peer communication. If you use OnCue, you may be familiar with this. iOS 9 has reverted back to using the same networking services as iOS 7. Our tests and reports confirm this as iOS 9 can communicate wirelessly with all iOS versions except iOS 8.

If you use OnCue, make sure you are running the same version of OnSong and iOS on all of your devices. We strongly urge you to use OnSong Connect for live use since it does not rely on Apple's frameworks and is more robust.

Some users are reporting that WiFi with an Internet Connection is required to use OnSong

We have some users claiming that OnSong is requiring an Internet connection in order to launch. If an Internet connection is not available, it is causing OnSong to crash. We have been working to replicate this scenario and unfortunately have not been able to. We do recommend resetting network settings to correct network-related issues. You can do this by going into the Settings app on your home screen and choosing General, Reset and then Reset Network Settings. This will remove your WiFi passwords so you will need to enter your passwords again.

Some users are reporting performance issues in iOS 9

This is a mixed bag. Some users are having performance problems after updating to iOS 9 while others report improvements. One user claims that iOS 9 has breathed new life into their iPad 2. Another user reports serious lag on iPad 4. We have experienced user interface lagging when opening the camera app or using the home screen on our iPhone 6 devices. Even iPhone 6s users are reporting problems.

Should You Upgrade?

We are still recommending not updating to iOS 9 for production devices because of these reports. We also want to work around the issues presented by iOS 9 in OnSong 1.999. iOS 9 does fix a number of issues and has not drastically effected 40% of our users.
Jason Kichlinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11006805253910934588noreply@blogger.com166tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7096691049268307183.post-69827622643390201052015-09-22T16:26:00.004-04:002015-09-23T14:42:53.933-04:00OnSong and iOS 9 Update
iOS 9 Update

It's been almost a week since iOS 9 was launched and we wanted to address your questions about the iOS 9 update and the status of our upcoming OnSong 1.999 release. We are still advising to hold off on updating to iOS 9 on production devices until we fully address all known iOS 9 issues. However, if you are willing to load iOS 9 and give us input on OnSong running on those devices, it will help us to be certain that we've addressed all known issues.

We have discovered and fixed two bugs that are caused by iOS 9:

The date picker control in the set editor does not appear in iOS 9. This is caused by a change late in the iOS development cycle that was not found until the final version. While we believe this is a bug in iOS 9, we have been able to workaround the issue in the upcoming OnSong 1.999 release.

Text in menus used for sorting and editing items shows as white text on a light grey background. This has been fixed in the upcoming OnSong 1.999.

We are getting the following reports that we are researching further, but have not been able to independently replicate:

Reports of users having issues with OnSong freezing or crashing. Some users report this is caused by WiFi being disabled. Resetting network settings or reinstalling OnSong seems to correct this issue.

Reports of wireless sharing not functioning with other devices. Apple has completely swapped out the Multicast DNS (Bonjour) service from a faulty product used in iOS 8. OnSong relies on Apple frameworks and multicast DNS for peer discovery. If you are using OnCue we recommend using the same versions of iOS and OnSong and strongly recommend using OnSong Connect instead which is built from the ground up to be cross-platform and not reliant on Apple's frameworks which are limiting in nature.

While many users have reported good results with iOS 9, others are reporting general performance issues as well as battery drain. This tends to happen with new iOS releases and is normally corrected by resetting network settings or through an update from Apple. Again, we believe it's important to not update if you are actively using your devices for live, production use.

Why Should I Upgrade?

iOS 9 has a number of great new features so it's no wonder that it's the fastest installed iOS update ever. Aside from the typical update woes, this looks to be a solid product. Issues that we have mentioned above should be worked out in a about a month.

iOS 9 has also fixed a number of outstanding bugs in iOS 8 that may effect some users. Upgrade if you have one of the following issues:

If you are experiencing hard system crashes when using stage monitor mode over a Lightning port video adapter.

If you are having problems with WiFi performance or Bluetooth disconnection.

If you use Microsoft Word documents and are experiencing incorrect formatting.

OnSong 1.999

OnSong 1.999 is a huge release and will be our last update for a period of time as we turn our attention towards OnSong 2.0 completion. That's why we are taking our time with the release of this build. Once we are certain it is "gold", we will release. Our goal is to make something that will last for a few months as we continue to reinvent how music is organized.

To celebrate OnSong 1.999 on iOS 9, we are releasing nine new features we think you'll like.

Spotify Integration lets you link streamed audio tracks to songs in your library.

Automatic Backup now lets you configure where to backup your library and how often if gets backed up.

Organizer Menu lets you mark the current song icons, place in sets and quickly add to books.

Improved Sliders are not made available in many menus to make selecting styles and keys faster.

Bluetooth MIDI is now supported for devices like the Quicco mi.1.

Quick Pick lets you quickly find songs from your library with a single tap of the menubar.

Playback Heads-Up Display lets you toggle playback, scrub to different track position, adjust volume and pan and audio routing – all from the menubar.

Timer Heads-Up Display lets you keep track of the elapsed time, or a countdown for both songs and sets.

Separate Styles for Books lets you keep a different key, capo, styles, notes and more for a song in each book.

For full details on this upcoming release, please view the release notes.

OnSong 2.0

We get a lot of questions about OnSong 2.0 and why it's taking so long to launch. The truth is that since we've announced OnSong 2.0, many of the features that we had on our list have been added into OnSong. Just this year we have added 100 features from our OnSong 2.0 list into OnSong 1.9x. On average OnSong is updated once a month and unlike other apps, we cram more functionality, features and fixes into 1/100 of a point than many do in a major version release. Be sure to review our list of releases notes to see what we've added.

Much of OnSong 2.0 has already been completed and now must be integrated into the OnSong 1.9x codebase. You've seen some of this added in the Color Picker component as well as Improved Sliders coming in OnSong 1.999.

Our Focus

Our primary focus has always been to serve our customers and keep OnSong working its best with as many versions of iOS and devices as possible. This has often times put our production schedule for OnSong 2.0 on pause. Our goal is to make OnSong 1.999 the best release yet so we can focus our attention on OnSong 2.0.

Thank You

Thank you for your patience as we work to resolve any upgrading issues and for your continued use of OnSong. Stay tuned for updates as we move forward with our vision for transforming music.
Jason Kichlinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11006805253910934588noreply@blogger.com22tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7096691049268307183.post-69717080642432999062015-07-20T11:40:00.000-04:002015-07-20T11:40:49.673-04:00The Swell Conference - Come See Us!!

It all started with a crazy idea to make an app to help make the lives of musicians easier. It was a simple idea: get rid of paper and keep it organized in a digital library and then provide tools to let you transpose music. But we didn't just stop there. We've listened to thousands of musicians to continue to evolve OnSong into an app to meet the needs of musicians everywhere. It's that modus operandi that is baked into the very culture of our small company.

In the early days of OnSong, we had many requests to make it easier to import chord charts found on the Internet. It seemed like a simple request and we were up for the technical challenge. After all, our goal is to meet the needs of musicians. We soon realized that we had stepped into a very shady and uncharted space.

You see, we never intended to step into the fray of the music publishing industry, piracy, terms of use agreements or the finer points of copyright law. We are not a media conglomerate nor lawyers. We are designers and programmers who want to work with any and all available content. As we navigated this new territory, we decided that the Internet search feature should be limited to search only one website. Since configuring this website could mean a lot of work, we defaulted to a website that allows publishers to have their content removed if it is found to infringe on copyrights. We reasoned that this was a fair stance to take, especially because we believe that every musician deserves to be paid and rewarded for their creativity and hard work. Simply put, we desire a healthy, creative music ecosystem.

Over the past few years we've learned that our stance on Internet content was flawed and was raising the ire of prominent figures in the music industry. We had made it a little too easy to search and acquire content from questionable sources. To complicate things, our users were never made aware of the terms of use of this content. In essence, we bypassed a lot these headaches to make things easy by abstracting all those concerns away. We shielded our users from the legal questionability of the content they were consuming.

In early 2015, we realized we needed to make a change. Not only did this go against our ethics and principals, but it was also standing in the way of us making an app with legitimate content. So we did the unthinkable and removed a feature. If there's one thing we've learned in the five years we've been working on OnSong, it's that people don't like change. To help with this transition, we've built a new feature called the Add To OnSong Safari Extension and worked to communicate these changes to our users ahead of the launch of OnSong 1.993. We know that we have angered and upset many of you and we do apologize for that. But we also have a moral, legal and ethical position that we need to take on this. We needed to change as much as we didn't want to upset you.

Many users have questioned our motives on this switch. Some think that we are getting some kind of financial benefit out of this arrangement. That's not the case. In fact, the lower ratings we are receiving on the App Store has drastically dropped our downloads. Since that is the only way we make money, it means that we need to cut back on our free customer support and slow down some of our plans for OnSong on other platforms or features that you have requested.

But what many people don't recognize is the number of benefits that removing the Internet Search and switching to the Add To OnSong Safari Extension has provided. First, we are now in good standing with publishers. That means we and our partners can negotiate deals that benefit our users. In addition, you are no longer limited to content from one website. You can now import content from any website. In addition, the Add To OnSong Safari Extension is not just limited to chord charts, but can also import PDF files and audio content was well! Many worship bands make their chord charts, backing tracks and loops freely available and you can import them using the Add To OnSong extension. This also works with other paid and subscription services as well outside of OnSong. Lastly, it means that you are in control of the content you import. Just check the terms of use on the content you use and then use it.

We are continuing to invest into the Add To OnSong Safari Extension to allow it to do much more than the Internet Search in OnSong could ever do. We are also working with content partners to bring the best chord chart content available to you in a way that doesn't lock you into a specific app or content vendor. Lastly, we are still, if not more so, focused on meeting the needs of musicians around the world and can't want to bring you new OnSong apps and services to make your life easier and to spread music throughout the world.

Fixes Issues - Breaks Cell Service and Touch ID

Apple today released iOS 8.0.1 and quickly pulled the release as their was widespread issues with loss of cellular connectivity as well as Touch ID. This update fixed one critical issues in iOS 8.0.0 that effected OnSong users. Here are our findings:

Apple HAS fixed the issue with 30-pin to HDMI adapters that would cause them to become non-functional on iOS 8.0.0.

Apple HAS NOT fixed the issue where RTF files cannot be displayed in the built-in web viewer.

Apple HAS NOT fixed the issue where Word DOCX files are rendered incorrectly.

iOS Update Release Notes

Apple has the following listed as bugs fixed in this release:

Fixes a bug so HealthKit apps can now be made available on the App Store

Addresses an issue where 3rd party keyboards could become deselected when a user enters their passcode

Fixes an issue that prevented some apps from accessing photos from the Photo Library

Improves the reliability of the Reachability feature on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus

Fixes an issue that could cause unexpected cellular data usage when receiving SMS/MMS messages

Better support of Ask To Buy for Family Sharing for In-App Purchases

Fixes an issue where ringtones were sometimes not restored from iCloud backups

Fixes a bug that prevented uploading photos and videos from Safari

How Do I Undo?

If you've installed iOS 8.0.1 and lost cellular connectivity, or if you have lost TouchID functionality, your only recourse is to back out of iOS 8.0.1 to iOS 8.0.0. This can be done by restoring your device using iTunes. There are no reported workarounds to restore these two services such as rebooting the device or resetting network settings. The only known solution is to restore to iOS 8.0.0.

iOS 8 is now available and we have had a number of users ask, "Is it safe to upgrade?".

While we are still urging caution with iOS 8, most users have reported it is working well. We are not currently in panic mode. We do suggest installing iOS 8 on a non-critical device first and make sure it works with your particular setup. There are some scenarios for users that may cause issues. Here are some issues that we are aware of:

Action menus appear as a white background with white text. This has been corrected in OnSong 1.992 which was released on September 28, 2014.

Viewing RTF files in the new iOS 8 viewer in nonfunctional and is a known issue with iOS 8. Update: This has been corrected in iOS 8.1 beta so we are confident that this will be corrected for most users as soon as iOS 8.1 is released.

There are issues with the text in the song editor being scrolled out of range when initially opening longer songs. We have replicated this and are troubleshooting. It appears to be widespread in other apps as well but does not seriously inhibit editing aside from an extra swipe gesture. This also appears to be corrected in iOS 8.1.

We are tracking issues with iOS 8 and external video adapters (but not AirPlay). We receive a hard, iOS-level crash when autoscrolling. We have notified Apple of this bug. Update: Still crashing in iOS 8.0.2 and iOS 8.1 beta. To prevent this crash, lower the resolution of the video output under OnSong Settings » Live Settings » External Video » Screen Resolution.

While the 30-pin to HDMI adapter was not working in iOS 8.0.0, this functionality has returned in iOS 8.0.2.

One user has reported a hard crash/kernel panic of iOS 8 when using AirPlay to an AppleTV.

Two users are reporting issues with Microsoft Word files rendering incorrectly. This is controlled by iOS 8 and nothing that OnSong can fix. We have submitted a bug report to Apple. Update: Still experiencing rendering issues in iOS 8.0.2.

One user reported performance issues that are also occurring in other apps such as periodic freezes. We are working to isolate this issue.

One user is reporting issues with the metronome stopping backing track audio. We have replicated this issue but it appears to be caused by setting "None" as the audio for the metronome and not specific to iOS 8.

Users are experiencing issues with Internet connectivity when using apps under iOS 8. We are working to replicate this issue.

Always remember to have a backup of your OnSong library in case something goes awry. Here's a backup and restore video tutorial to help keep your songs and sets safe during the transition.

Hope that helps with your decision making!
Jason Kichlinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11006805253910934588noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7096691049268307183.post-1210270193984992652014-09-13T21:47:00.000-04:002014-09-13T21:47:49.183-04:00OnSong 1.991 is on the wayI want to thank everyone for their patience on this one. We've had a number of technical issues this week and we have been able to get OnSong 1.991 out to you. Please update to let us know if that corrects any issues you were experiencing. It may take a an hour or two to become available on your App Store.
Here's a link to the OnSong 1.991 release notes.Jason Kichlinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11006805253910934588noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7096691049268307183.post-39982620176193454252014-09-12T23:00:00.000-04:002014-09-13T11:36:18.328-04:00Critical Issue When Using Spaces in Chords
At OnSong, our top-most priority is our users. We are working around the clock to address some issues that some of our users are reporting.

First, we are hearing reports and experiencing issues ourselves with the App Store. This appears to be due to changes Apple is making in preparation for iOS 8. While we've heard users having issues with the update process in the past, we are seeing an influx of installation and provisioning problems. We are trying to get in touch with Apple about these issues but have not heard back after repeated attempts.

Second, there is a crash condition happening in OnSong 1.99 caused by improperly formatted chords that include spaces in square brackets. We were able to turn around an update with an Apple-approved fix in less than 24 hours, but due to these App Store issues, the update has yet to be made available. We released the update on 9/11/2014 and it was being "Processed for the App Store" for more than 24 hours. After repeated unaddressed contacts with Apple to correct this issue, the status has been changed to "Waiting for Review", essentially starting the approval process over. We are continuing to fight for this update to be released ASAP.

View OnSong 1.991 Release Notes

If you are experiencing a crash, go into the Settings app on your device and choose OnSong under Applications. Turn on "Forget Last Song" under the Debug menu and restart OnSong. You can edit your chord charts by going into the Songs menu, tapping "Edit" and then tapping on the name of the song to "Edit Song". This will open the song editor without viewing the song. The crash is occurring if a chord in square brackets contains a space like this:

[Am on G]

Correct these errors and save. This should get you back up and running.

If the Forget Last Song option does not open OnSong, it's likely that you've received a bad installation from the App Store update process and may need to reinstall. Be sure you have a backup of your OnSong library. If not, please contact support for assistance.

We are working around the clock to resolve these issues, answer your support inquiries and do what we can to keep everyone up and running despite these challenges.

No where is that more evident than in the OnSong Settings screen.

We've been working non-stop on OnSong since it's launch in early 2010 with the idea that users should have the freedom to customize their experience. To keep OnSong easy-to-use, we've tucked most of this customization power away. Many users never venture into settings and those who have can be confused by the options that are available.

Starting in OnSong 1.987, we've completely reorganized. If you are used to things being somewhere, they most likely moved. Watch the video below to see where your settings went and our reasoning behind the new location.

For those of you that want a quick overview of the new structure, here's an overview:

About
We haven't moved this and it's right up top with the version of OnSong you are using.

Display Settings
Here you'll find settings that effect how songs appear on the display. Low light mode, language, sleep screen as well as song formatting and song viewer. Song formatting is used to set global settings for how your music appears.

Import Settings
Use this to adjust how Dropbox, Internet and iTunes file sharing works, as well as how to handle text files and existing songs. We've also lumped synchronization settings in here as well.

Live Settings
These have to do with the "live" or interactive features of OnSong. Chord playback, external video, live bar settings and metronome are in here. You can also toggle sound effects on and off.

Menu Settings
This menu is divided into a different section for every button on the menubar. Use this to change how these menus operate and their default values too. For instance, Style Preferences lets you choose default font sizes and styles for new chord charts.

Navigation Settings
This menu defines how your songs and sets are navigated. Here you'll find foot pedal settings, hot corners, navigation zones, scrolling behavior and triggers.

Debug
This is the same as the original settings and contains features to help get you back on your feet.Jason Kichlinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11006805253910934588noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7096691049268307183.post-7536534007019038602014-06-17T16:08:00.000-04:002014-06-17T16:08:07.459-04:00Create and Flip Through PagesOnSong started as a great experiment. We wanted to see if it was possible to create a great tool that would replace the binder for musicians around the world. Through the input of musicians like you, we've been able to do just that. We've reimagined how music works on stage.

One of our first goals was to get rid of the concept of pages. We thought that music is linear and shouldn't be chopped up. We wanted to rid the world of paper cuts and fumbled sheets. So since OnSong was first released in 2010, we've always allowed your music to scroll in one continuous column. This also works great with every file type as well as features like autoscroll.

Love it or hate it, this is how things have been for years. But in OnSong 1.987, you now have the opportunity to scroll to pages. In fact, you can also create page breaks in your text-based chord charts and scroll to those pages as well. If you are viewing your music in landscape orientation, we even support half page scrolling automatically. How cool is that?

Watch the video below to see how to change your scroll behavior to pages and how to add page breaks in your existing OnSong or ChordPro formatted songs. Whether performing digitally or printing your text-based chord charts, this new feature will be sure to please.
No longer do you need to wear a watch, or remember your portable gaming system. Portable CD players, voice recorders, notebooks, calendars, camera, camcorder, and more are a thing of the past. Oh and of course, it's a phone too.

For musicians, the utility of these devices is even greater. Need a tuner or a metronome? No problem. There's an app for that. You can even use your device as an instrument or a multitrack recorder. But one thing that working musicians depend on are simple backing tracks to accompany them on stage.

OnSong makes it simple to play backing tracks linked to your chord charts. This means you no longer have to fumble with a separate playback device on stage or rely on on the sound guy to do it. When used with an AirTurn foot pedal, you can also start and stop your tracks using a dedicated foot pedal, or when you first tap the forward pedal to scroll your song.

Starting in OnSong 1.987, you can now crossfade between songs in your music library. There is a little setup involved and you do need to use non-DRM tracks that are stored locally on your device, but otherwise it's easy to get started!
That's why we've made OnSong a valuable tool for musicians by giving it all the features and functions you've asked for. But we also like to do more with less, and we think you'll agree. That's why our app is so affordable. No where is this value more evident than with our lyrics projection feature.

OnSong has always done lyrics projection and we love hearing the awesome stories of how you've put it to good use. Whether it's being used by chaplains to lead thousands of marines in a song, by underground churches in the Middle East, or by music therapists helping stroke patients sing again... we are honored to be right there with you. Maybe that's why we've worked extra hard on a brand new version of lyrics projection with motion backgrounds.

First of all, we've made lyrics projection work even smoother. We've tightened up crossfading between lyrics text and switching between backgrounds. It's smooth and works great whether you are using a video adapter and cable or connecting wirelessly to an HDTV or LCD projector with AirPlay. To see how to use lyrics projection, check our our video tutorial.

We didn't stop there. We've added the ability to use motion backgrounds! Why purchase expensive software to run on another computer in the back of house when you can do it all for less than the price of a decent HDMI cable. Plus, we've given you a full media library to help you quickly switch between colors, still and motion backgrounds and gradients. Go ahead and add your own backgrounds from your photo library or browse popular background websites like Playback Media to import backgrounds from services you already use.

But what if we could make great looking presentations even easier and more affordable to make? We did that too. Purchase high-quality motion backgrounds right inside of your media library for just $2.99. That's less than a third of other sites and they are instantly available.

Watch our feature review below to see just how easy it is to do professional-grade lyrics projection.
Take the iPad for instance. OnSong has been an important tool for musicians since its inception in early 2010 when the first iPad shipped. Since that time, our team has been committed to making your life easier with tools that work great whether in the studio or on the stage. OnSong and the iPad together have changed how musicians approach their profession.

While the focus of OnSong is to give our users a rock-solid platform they can rely on, we occasionaly come out with new features. Some changes are incremental. Some are expected by our users. Then there are some that we think are downright awesome.

Messages is a new feature that let's you communicate with your team. You may use hand signals or musical cues to lead your band in the right direction of the song. But what if you could flash these messages on the screens already in front of them? Messages gives you the ability to create custom messages and send them to your team in real-time.

One of the limiting factors to any technology is making it easy to use. This is even more important in a live performance in front of an audience. You need something that "just works" and doesn't get in your way. Enter OnSong Shift.

Shift works in conjunction with a four-pedal foot switch like the AirTurn BT-105 4-Pedal to let you shift gears. Each gear is a different pedal configuration. Set up your first gear to navigate through your songs and sets. Set up a second gear to send messages to your team. Maybe add a third gear to transpose or capo a song. Add as many gears as you need to get the job done.

Maybe it's not as big of a deal as we think. We will let you be the judge! Watch the feature review video below.

Be sure to let us know how you use OnSong Shift and Messages! We'd love to know!
Jason Kichlinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11006805253910934588noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7096691049268307183.post-1585158168456497532014-03-01T23:20:00.001-05:002014-03-02T01:51:51.000-05:00Stage Monitor Mode in OnSong
With OnSong, paper music charts are a thing the past. But did you know that with some basic equipment, you can modernize your stage and play music indefinitely, all while keeping your team on the same page?

In this video, Brandon shows us how to connect your iPad up to multiple HDTV screens that are placed on a stage on tripod mounts. 23" HDTVs are about the same size as a standard music stand. When connected to and iPad running OnSong, the screen come alive, showing chord charts that scroll, change and flip as the leader chooses where to go. While this video demonstrates using HDMI connections, you could also use VGA cables as well.
